REFRIGIWEAR INSULATED PPE SUPPORTS CHILEAN AIR FORCE IN ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION

THE CHALLENGE: ENDURING EXTREME WEATHER IN ANTARCTICA

In one of the harshest climates on Earth—Union Glacier, Antarctica, just 1,000 km from the South Pole—the Chilean Air Force plays a critical role in transporting personnel, supporting scientists, and maintaining operations at Chile’s southernmost research base.

With winds reaching up to 90 km/h, temperatures plummeting to −30°C, and solid ice replacing snow on the ground, these missions demand extreme physical endurance and gear capable of performing in brutally inhospitable conditions.

Reliable equipment, especially fully insulated PPE and snow gear, is essential for survival and productivity.

THE SOLUTION: REFRIGIWEAR INSULATED SOFTSHELL JACKET & BIB OVERALLS

To meet these demands, the Chilean Air Force equips its personnel with Insulated Softshell Jackets and Bib Overalls from RefrigiWear, comfort rated for temperatures as low as -20°F (-29°C). Guests who need even more insulation from the harsh conditions at Union Glacier, such as Chilean journalist Polo Ramirez (featured at right) are outfitted with even warmer RefrigiWear gear, including the Extreme Softshell Jacket and Bib Overall, rated for −60°F (−51°C) conditions.

RefrigiWear insulated PPE was originally developed for industrial freezer and cold storage environments, but the high level of warmth, comfort and versatility has made these products a critical part of the uniform for missions involving:

  • Aircraft landings and refueling on ice runways
  • Scientific station logistics and cargo handling
  • Emergency preparedness for sudden weather shifts
